The purpose of an Electronic Records Management System (ERMS) is to allow for the long-term retention of digital documents and to protect them from alteration so that they can be presented as evidence in court if needed.

The Electronic Records Management System supports archives, i.e. documents in their final version that must be retained in accordance with legal retention periods.
