In 2008, Adobe handed over control of the development of the PDF format to ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation), making PDF an « open format. » The specifications for the current version of PDF (1.7) are documented at ISO 32000. ISO is also responsible for updating and developing future versions (e.g. PDF 2.0 at ISO 3200-2, which is expected to be released in 2015).
